When Change Feels Like Loss

ยท 1 min read

We often talk about change as if it is only gain. A new chapter, a fresh start, an exciting opportunity.

But every change is also a loss. Even the changes you choose โ€” the ones you have wanted โ€” require leaving something behind. A version of yourself. A way of life. A relationship with who you used to be.

Naming the Loss

One of the most healing things you can do when moving through change is to name what you are losing. Not to cling to it โ€” but to honor it.

That job you left was also community. That relationship that ended was also a version of your future. That old identity you are releasing was also a way of understanding yourself.

Holding Both

Grief and excitement can coexist. Relief and sadness can share the same moment. You do not have to choose.

The most honest thing you can say about change is sometimes: I am ready and I am grieving. Both are true. Both deserve acknowledgment.
